The Halstead Historical Society was formed in August 1988 for the express purpose of saving the Halstead Santa Fe Train Depot Railway Station from demolition. After almost four years of negotiations, the Society purchased the building from Santa Fe Railroad in March of 1992 for $1.00 and the 1.6 acre property for $5,000. Over the next three years, society members contributed many hours of labor and solicited thousands of dollars in donations. Nearly $50,000 was spent to restore the Depot and develop the Halstead Historical Heritage Museum. The Halstead Heritage Museum and Depot was re-dedicated with opening ceremonies on March 18, 1995.
As our museum continues to grow we have also, due to many generous contributions and grants, been able to expand our exhibit space. In addition to the two main galleries and our ticket office/gift shop we are extreemly proud of our new exhibit space in the depot's baggage and cargo rooms.
