Construction on the Halstead Railway Station was completed in 1917 at an approximate cost of $25,000. It was the fourth depot building to serve the city of Halstead. The Halstead Independent noted at the time that "the Santa Fe [Railroad] has provided Halstead with the most modern station that can be built...with steam heating, electric lights, toilets, sewer facilities...it is a station capable of meeting the needs of a town 10 times our size."
The Halstead Depot ceased rail operations in the early 1970's. In 1988 the Santa Fe Railway sold the building for demolition. Due to the forside of several Halstead residents, the Depot was saved from demolition and with the founding of the Halstead Historical Society, negotiations were started to purchase the building. After several years, the depot became the property of the Halstead Historical Society. That's when the work really began in order to upgrade the Depot that had deteriorated after many years of vacancy.
A Capital Campain raised the money needed to repair the roof with period tiles. The interior walls and woodwork were stripped of layers of paint that had been applied over the years. The walls were then painted a color simular to the bottom layer of stripped paint. After our grand opening it has been a constant pleasure to upgrade the facility to accomodate our ever expanding artifact collection.
Recently we have made an opening in the wall of the Basore Gallery to open the Baggage Room to visitors. The work on the Baggage Room was extensive, the brick floor was reset, the walls were scraped of old paint, the ceiling was torn down and replaced and the heating and cooling system was extended to provide adequate climate control into the room. All of the work was worth it! In November 9th 2007, we were awarded the Award Of Excellence from the Kansas Museums Association for our renovation project. This gallary now houses our extensive collection of Santa Fe and Harvey House items.
